The PSOE is the ruling centre-left party in Spain. It was founded on May 2, 1879 by Pablo Iglesias Posse. The party joined the Second International.
The 11th National Congress held in 1918 passed a resolution opposing armed intervention in Soviet Russia. In June 1920, there was a split within the party, and some members joined the Spanish Communist Party. In January 1936, the party joined the People's Front. During the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939, the Workers' Socialist Party organized a coalition government with the Republican and Communist parties. After Franco implemented dictatorship, he declared the Spanish Workers' Socialist Party illegal. The party was forced to go underground and its main leaders went into exile abroad. At the congress held in France in October 1974, the "Renewal Faction" led by Felipe Gonzalez defeated the "Historical Faction" and gained leadership of the party. Obtained legal status in April 1976.
In June 1977, he participated in the general election and won 124 seats in the House of Representatives, becoming the largest opposition party in the country. In 1978, it merged with the People's Socialist Party. In October 1981, the Workers' Socialist Party held its 29th Congress and Felipe Gonzalez was elected as General Secretary. In the October 1982 general election, the party won 202 out of 350 seats in the House of Representatives and became the ruling party. He was re elected in three general elections in 1986, 1989, and 1993. The party advocates for the implementation of a pluralistic socialist system. Adopting a pragmatic and moderate reform approach, emphasizing the role of market economy, advocating for a federal republic but accepting the current monarchy; Advocating peace, security, and cooperation abroad, and carrying out comprehensive diplomacy with a focus on Europe. In April 2004, the Labour and Social Party won the general election and returned to power. In November 2011, the Workers' Socialist Party lost its ruling position in the general election to the People's Party.
In the April 2019 general election, it became the largest party in parliament, and in the November general election of the same year, it retained the largest party, and on January 7, 2020, the Socialist Party and the Left campaign alliance "United We Can" jointly formed a government. In the July 2023 general election, it became the second largest party in parliament. It has about 620,000 members, and was in power six times between 1982 and 2011, and returned to power after the successful impeachment of the Rajoy government on June 2, 2018.
